LAUDERDALE LAKES, FL – At approximately noon on Thursday Broward County Regional Communications received a call in reference to a transport from Cleveland Clinic to Broward Health Medical Center. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded to Cleveland Clinic and requested air rescue for the victim then notified law enforcement at approximately 12:20 p.m. in reference to the victim having a bullet wound to the face.
At approximately 12:22 p.m., Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies from the Weston district were dispatched to Cleveland Clinic. Upon their arrival, they learned that a security officer identified as Julian Suarez, and a maintenance worker from Sagemont School were in the parking lot located at 1570 Sagemont Way in Weston when Suarez accidentally shot the victim with an unauthorized firearm in the eye. Suarez, a private security guard for Sagemont School, was not authorized to have a firearm on school campus.
Suarez took the victim to Cleveland Clinic, dropped him off and then continued to drive home. Deputies responded to Sagemont School to establish a crime scene and notified detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit.
The case is an active and ongoing criminal investigation.
