CHARLESTON, WV – On Wednesday, May 25, 2022, a female bystander fatally shot a man who had opened fire on a crowd of people with a semi-automatic AR-15-type rifle in Charleston, West Virginia.

According to authorities, Dennis Butler, 37, pulled out the rifle and began shooting at dozens of people attending the outdoor birthday-graduation party outside a Renaissance Circle apartment complex when he was gun-down by the unnamed woman, police said in a statement.

Officers say their investigation found that Butler, a prior convicted felon, was not entitled to own any guns. He was approached earlier that day about speeding through the apartment complex while children were playing and then returned a short time later with the AR 15 style rifle and started shooting people attending the party.

Police say that the woman’s quick action of immediately pulling her legally owned pistol and firing likely prevented a mass casualty event. No one at the party was injured and according to Chief of Detectives Tony Hazelett, no charges will be filed against the woman.

“Instead of running from the threat, she engaged with the threat and saved several lives last night,” Chief of detectives Tony Hazelett told news outlets Thursday.
