The department has urged anyone with information or video footage related to the incident to come forward and aid in their investigation. Although no witness directly observed the altercation, a local man revealed that he had spoken to Kessler just moments before the fatal incident

Returning from his car, he discovered Kessler lying on the ground, bleeding profusely. Despite attempts by several onlookers, including the alleged perpetrator, to contact emergency services, they could not get through. The witness described Kessler as being in critical condition, occasionally displaying signs of consciousness but suffering from a severe head injury.
