While New Jersey is nicknamed the Garden State, its notable high population density contrasts with safety. While some cities are relatively secure, certain areas can be unsettling.

New Jersey’s Top 5 Most Dangerous Cities

It is critical to prioritize your family’s well-being and security, so before making a decision, give these things some thought.

Camden

Camden, the most dangerous city in New Jersey, boasts the highest crime rates.

In 2022, its property crime rate reached 9,220 per 100,000 people, with a violent crime rate of 10.6 per 1,000—significantly surpassing the state average of 3,570 property crimes and 5.5 violent crimes.

The city grapples with elevated crime levels influenced by factors like unemployment, poverty, and limited resources. Furthermore, issues such as drug trafficking and gang violence contribute significantly to Camden’s challenging security landscape.

Newark

The largest city in New Jersey, Newark, is another place where there is a lot of crime.

The rate of violent crime in Newark in 2022 was 7.5 per 1,000 people, while the rate of property crime was 5,733 per 100,000 residents.

Similar to Camden, these figures are influenced by issues with drug trafficking, gang violence, unemployment, and poverty.

Paterson

The violent crime-ridden city of Paterson, New Jersey, is slowly improving.

Even though heroin addiction and gang activity still account for a large portion of crime, things are getting better.

It’s important to remember that there are wide variations in neighborhood safety. It might be safe to stroll through some areas at night, but it can also be risky in others.

Atlantic City

Even though Atlantic City is a well-liked vacation spot, there are 6.2 violent crimes for every 1,000 residents and 5,209 property crimes for every 100,000 residents.

The city has a high poverty rate, a large tourist population, and a history of gang violence, all of which contribute to its crime problems.

Trenton

New Jersey’s capital, Trenton, is acknowledged as one of the state’s most dangerous cities. Trenton has nearly threefold the national average of 1,169 violent crimes every 100,000 residents, which is a shockingly high rate of violent crime. In addition, there are a lot of property crimes in the city.

Trenton is currently dealing with serious issues like high rates of poverty, urban deterioration, and criminal activity by gangs. The situation is still out of control and requires more attention even in spite of the police’s best efforts to reduce crime.
