Israeli officials greenlit Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites for Gaza, requiring clearance from the Israeli Ministry of Communications beforehand.
Shlomo Karhi, Israel’s Minister of Communications, extended congratulations to Musk on X, affirming the achievement of a foundational understanding between Starlink and the Ministry.
This agreement aims to expand the satellite’s coverage to include the Gaza Strip, but its implementation is dependent on obtaining explicit approval from Israel’s regulatory authority.
The planned agreement is consistent with Musk’s previous pledge to give internet connection to globally recognized humanitarian organizations in Gaza; this pledge was made after Israel cut off internet and communications in reaction to terrorist strikes in the area on October 7.
Even though Israeli authorities made an announcement, neither Musk nor Starlink have officially verified the agreement. Business Insider reached out to representatives of both parties for comment, but their inquiries were unanswered. As a result, specific information about the arrangement remains unclear and ambiguous.
Musk’s Silence Amidst Ongoing Developments
Musk initially encountered criticism from Israel for proposing internet connectivity over Gaza, with Karhi expressing concerns at the time that it might be utilized for terrorist activities, affirming that Israel will use all means at its disposal to fight against the proposal.
This offer to provide Starlink over Gaza, coupled with Israel’s reaction, coincided with vehement opposition to Musk’s comments on X, which many deemed antisemitic.
Musk participated in a discussion on the platform concerning the controversial great replacement conspiracy theory, which led to considerable criticism and negative reactions directed towards him.
After Musk’s visit to Israel, which occurred during a short break in the ongoing conflict, Israel made public the agreement regarding Starlink, making it subject to Israel’s authorization of the devices.
However, Musk has chosen not to make any remarks or declarations regarding this recent development as of the current moment.
