Amid the aftermath of a fatal crash involving an Osprey aircraft during a training mission in southwestern Japan, tensions have escalated between Japan and the US military.
The incident, resulting in one crew member’s death and seven others missing alongside the aircraft, has prompted Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno to express deep concerns.
Despite repeated requests for information regarding the crash, Japan’s top government spokesperson highlighted the US military’s alleged lack of transparency.
Matsuno emphasized Japan’s concerns about the situation by saying, “We are concerned about the continuing Osprey flights despite our repeated requests and the absence of a sufficient explanation about their safety.”
The US-made Osprey, known for its hybrid design enabling both helicopter-style takeoffs and airplane-like cruising speeds, has been under scrutiny due to previous crashes. Japanese officials, alarmed by the recent incident, have appealed to the US military to temporarily halt Osprey flights in the country, except for those involved in search operations.
Japan’s Urgent Information Request
Defense Minister Minoru Kihara emphasized the need for confirmation of the aircraft’s safety before allowing further flights.
Kihara revealed his discussion with Lt. Gen. Ricky Rupp of US Forces Japan, urging specific measures regarding Osprey operations in response to the crash.
While search operations continue, Japan seeks prompt and comprehensive information from the US side.
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa urged the United States to swiftly provide information, reflecting the growing concerns within Japan’s political circles regarding the safety of Osprey aircraft.
In Okinawa, Governor Denny Tamaki called for the suspension of all Osprey flights, including those involved in search operations. Tamaki expressed serious doubts about Osprey’s safety, stressing the need for a thorough reassessment.
Japan’s insistence on openness and safety precautions from the US military highlights the seriousness of the problem and the need to address safety concerns regarding Osprey flights across Japanese airspace as both countries work through the aftermath of this tragedy.
