The Nevada Highway Patrol was rocked early on Thursday morning by a horrific occurrence in Las Vegas that claimed the lives of two troopers while performing their duties.
Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix were fatally struck by a drunken driver while they were aiding a motorist on the side of a Las Vegas freeway near the Spaghetti Bowl.
The troopers had stopped to assist a seemingly sleeping driver parked off Interstate 15 near D Street around 3:23 am, reported the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which is investigating the tragic event.
Shortly after their stop, a white Chevrolet HHR collided with the troopers and fled the scene. One trooper succumbed to the injuries at the scene while the other passed away at UMC Trauma Hospital.

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old Jemarcus Williams, was later found and arrested on multiple charges, including reckless driving resulting in death, driving under the influence resulting in death, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving death.
Sergeant Abbate, an officer since December 2013 who was recently promoted, and Trooper Felix, who joined the force in January 2019 after serving in the US Air Force, were remembered for their unwavering dedication to serving the state of Nevada.
The Nevada State Police extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of our fallen heroes, expressed the NSP in a statement, urging privacy for the grieving families and department during this trying time.
The Las Vegas police department mourned the loss in a tribute on social media, honoring the service and sacrifice made by these troopers.
A solemn video posted later showed a procession of officers escorting the flag-draped caskets of Abbate and Felix into a building while a multitude of officers paid their respects, a poignant moment highlighting the immense loss felt by the law enforcement community.
