The Florida GOP faces controversy as party leaders criticize State GOP Chairman Christian Ziegler over a rape allegation that has surfaced.
This accusation stems from an incident involving Ziegler, his wife, and another woman during a previous consensual encounter. Ziegler has not yet been charged, but Sarasota police are still looking into him.
The scenario gained traction after the Florida Center for Government Accountability published a search warrant affidavit that included further information about the alleged attack.
The affidavit delves into the events leading up to the encounter on October 2, where the woman initially agreed to a tryst involving Ziegler and his wife.
However, upon learning of Bridget Ziegler’s absence, the woman expressed her hesitation, indicating her initial interest was primarily for Bridget’s involvement.
Reportedly, after the woman canceled the encounter, Ziegler arrived uninvited at her apartment, leading to the alleged assault, as detailed in the affidavit. Subsequently, the woman reported the incident to the Sarasota police, who conducted a rape kit examination at a local hospital.
Ziegler’s Assertion of Innocence Amid Allegations
In response, Ziegler maintained to detectives that the encounter was consensual, stating that he had recorded it and uploaded the video to Google Drive.
However, authorities were unable to locate this purported video despite a search warrant served to Google.
As news of the allegations surfaced recently, additional records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request shed further light on the matter.
The records included transcripts of conversations between the woman and Ziegler via Instagram and phone calls, prompting police to file search warrants for Ziegler’s electronic devices.
Amidst the turmoil, Ziegler has adamantly declared his innocence, affirming that he and his family are being unfairly targeted due to their outspoken political presence.
Despite mounting pressure and concerns within the Florida GOP, Ziegler affirmed his intent to remain in his position, emphasizing ongoing support for Governor Ron DeSantis amid internal party divisions over the upcoming presidential primary.
