California City’s Latest Move: Flying the Palestinian Flag on Public Display
A California city is getting ready to fly the Palestinian flag at Eaton Plaza in downtown Fresno as a symbolic act of solidarity and remembering for those who lost their lives in the Israel war.
City Councilmember Miguel Arias revealed that this initiative, scheduled for Friday, has been organized by his office to stand in unity with the affected community.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Eaton Plaza has seen a flag-raising ceremony. Arias’ office previously orchestrated a similar event to demonstrate support for Israel on October 12, following the devastating attack by terrorists on October 7.
This upcoming display of the Palestinian flag coincides with the commencement of Hanukkah, a significant Jewish holiday.
Eaton Plaza, in line with Fresno’s city code, serves as a designated location for community flag-raising events.
California Guidelines for Flag Display
Therefore, there is no need for permission from the City Council or the City Manager to fly flags at this place, California, making it possible to display these kinds of acts of solidarity.
This move towards raising the Palestinian flag comes amidst recent legislative actions. In May of 2023, the board introduced a flag ordinance aimed at restricting the flags permissible for display at county facilities.
The proposed ordinance dictates that only the flags of the United States of America and the State of California are permitted to adorn official flagpoles in these locations.
Following the flying of the pride flag at Fresno City Hall in 2021, local religious and political conservatives expressed concerns, which led to the formulation of this California legislative maneuver.
Scheduled for 2:30 pm this Friday, the flag-raising event at Eaton Plaza signifies a poignant statement of support and commemoration.
However, Councilmember Arias’ office declined to provide further comment, while other City Council members have yet to respond to requests for their input on this matter.
