Ex-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) firmly backed former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential race.
In a pre-released snippet from an upcoming interview, McCarthy pledged his backing for Trump, firmly asserting, “I will support the president. I will support President Trump.”
Anticipating a hypothetical rematch of the 2020 presidential race, McCarthy confidently predicted Trump’s triumph in such a scenario.
He further speculated that a return to office for the former president would usher in a “red wave,” projecting an increase in Republican House seats and a reversal of the Senate’s control to the GOP.
Expressing his willingness to serve in a Cabinet role in a potential Trump administration, McCarthy highlighted his history of collaboration with Trump on various policies. McCarthy answered, “If I’m the best person for the job, yes,” highlighting his honesty and his collaborative nature with the outgoing president.
McCarthy’s Timely Endorsement Post Leadership Upheaval
This endorsement from McCarthy arrives following months of avoiding public endorsements and
on the heels of his announcement to step down from Congress by year-end.
His support for Trump emerged not long after he was ousted from his role as House leader in October, a move that occurred just nine months into his time as speaker, highlighting the proximity of events.
Regarding the vice presidency, McCarthy suggested former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as a potential candidate, acknowledging her popularity in the general election.
Nevertheless, the campaign representing Haley has denied allegations suggesting her active pursuit or interest in securing the vice presidential position.
Despite not disclosing specific plans, McCarthy pledged his commitment to serving the country in novel capacities. He reiterated his dedication to recruiting top talent for elected positions, emphasizing his continued dedication to public service.
McCarthy’s resolute endorsement of Trump signals a significant alignment within the Republican landscape, setting the stage for a potentially dynamic political future.
