Ohio woman, Whitney M. Durant, acknowledged pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge in connection with defacing a pro-life reproductive health clinic in Bowling Green earlier this year.

Durant, who also goes by the name Soren Monroe, admitted to painting various phrases including LIARS, Fake clinic, Fund Abortion, Abort God, and Jane’s Revenge on the premises of HerChoice clinic on April 15. At the time of the incident, she was a 20-year-old student at Bowling Green State University.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division emphasized the gravity of defacing facilities offering reproductive health services.

Clarke reaffirmed the Justice Department’s commitment to upholding the FACE Act, emphasizing the protection of patients seeking reproductive health services and the sanctity of institutions providing such services.

While acknowledging the right to protest, Clarke underscored the need for peaceful demonstrations. She stated that Durant had crossed a line by defacing the clinic, which explicitly does not offer abortion services or referrals, as detailed on its website.

Ohio woman, Whitney M. Durant, acknowledged pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge in connection with defacing a pro-life reproductive health clinic in Bowling Green earlier this year.

Ohio’s abortion laws allow the procedure until the point of viability, a stage defined as when a fetus can sustain life outside the uterus with medical aid.

The state witnessed a recent referendum supporting abortion rights in its constitution, but lawmakers have expressed intentions to contest this decision. Durant was charged by the US Attorney’s Office on July 5.

The court will assess multiple factors in her case, including any prior record, role in the offense, and the nature of violations, to determine sentencing. She is scheduled for sentencing on April 9, 2024, facing a maximum sentence of one year in prison.

In response to the incident, HerChoice issued a statement expressing gratitude to law enforcement for addressing the vandalism.

The clinic highlighted its commitment to providing a peaceful space for women facing pregnancy decisions, ensuring access to information and support during such crucial times.
