Emotions were intense as the Sarasota County School Board gathered for its last meeting of the year, characterized by an agenda that sharply divided opinions and viewpoints among attendees.
Ziegler, attending her first public appearance post-allegations, confronted the board’s legal counsel seeking clarification on a resolution calling for her resignation.
However, the council deemed the resolution as ceremonial, lacking any power to remove a board member. Despite her defiant stance, Ziegler remained tight-lipped, evading comments from reporters before and during the meeting.
The mounting pressure for her resignation stems from the unfolding scandal surrounding her husband, Christian Ziegler, and her involvement in the controversy.
Ziegler’s Tenure and Replacement Process
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has the only authority to remove her, as her tenure will expire in 2026 if she decides not to step down. But in the event of a resignation, the governor would name a replacement, effective until the 2024 election cycle.
Before the meeting commenced, board members, as well as conservative and liberal activist groups, publicly called for Ziegler’s resignation.
The situation extends beyond Bridget Ziegler herself, with her husband, Christian Ziegler, facing similar calls to resign from his position as Florida GOP chairman.
The meeting flooded with over 70 speakers, featured impassioned pleas both for and against Ziegler’s resignation. While some, like Martin Hyde, dismissed the resolution as a political maneuver, others, including local activist Paulina Testerman, urged Ziegler to step down, highlighting what they perceived as hypocrisy in her actions.
The atmosphere remained charged as supporters and critics voiced their opinions, reflecting the deep divisions within the community over the controversial matter.
