French Actor Gérard Depardieu Accused by Multiple Women of Sexual Harassment and Assault

The recent death of French actress Emmanuelle Debever, known for accusing renowned actor Gérard Depardieu of sexual misconduct, has sparked an investigation by the Paris prosecutor’s office.

Debever had publicly accused Depardieu of groping her in 1982 while they were co-starring in the film Danton.

The tragic incident unfolded as Debever’s partner reported her disappearance on November 29, accompanied by a troubling note.

Subsequently, Debever leaped from a Paris bridge into the Seine River, was rescued, and received emergency medical attention before being transported to a hospital. Regrettably, she passed away on December 7 at the age of 60.

Coinciding with this distressing event, a documentary investigating allegations of sexual misconduct against Depardieu was broadcast on the national TV channel France 2.

The documentary featured footage of Depardieu making lewd remarks and gestures during a trip to North Korea in 2018, escalating the scrutiny surrounding the actor’s conduct.

Depardieu, 74, has been under investigation since December 2020 for rape and sexual assault allegations raised by actress Charlotte Arnould in 2018.

Depardieu’s Claims of Innocence Amid Allegations

The recent death of French actress Emmanuelle Debever, known for accusing renowned actor Gérard Depardieu of sexual misconduct, has sparked an investigation by the Paris prosecutor’s office.

However, the actor has consistently refuted any claims of criminal behavior, stating his innocence in an open letter published in the French newspaper Le Figaro in October.

Debever’s accusations against Depardieu have prompted authorities to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, a standard procedure in France for cases with unknown or suspicious causes of death.

Previously, French investigative news outlet Mediapart had reported allegations against Depardieu from 13 women, detailing incidents of harassment, groping, or assault during film shoots spanning from 2004 to 2022.

Lawyers for Depardieu have vehemently denied these accusations, terming them an indictment to which the actor has no intention of responding.

The France 2 documentary has since indicated an increase in the number of accusers, now reaching a total of 16 individuals leveling allegations against the esteemed actor.

The ongoing investigations and mounting allegations have put Depardieu under increased public scrutiny, raising questions about accountability and justice in the entertainment industry.
