China’s Xi Jinping Commends Strong Partnership with Russia as Trade Hits Historic $200 Billion Mark

China and Russia finished a strong year of collaboration, affirming their commitment to strengthen connections across various areas as their trade hit a notable milestone.

The partnership between the two nations, highlighted during the gathering between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, showcased a thriving bilateral relationship.

Surpassing expectations, bilateral trade between China and Russia surged beyond $200 billion in the initial 11 months of the year, well ahead of the 2024 target initially set by Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin back in 2019. 

This accomplishment, announced by Xi during the meeting, illustrates the rapid growth and enduring strength of economic exchanges between the two nations.

Despite geopolitical tensions triggered by Russia’s 2022 incursion into Ukraine, trade between the two countries escalated by approximately 30% in 2022, reaching a record-breaking $190 billion. Xi Jinping lauded these latest trade figures, affirming the robust resilience and promising prospects for further cooperation between China and Russia.

Xi emphasized the importance of leveraging political mutual trust to strengthen their ties further, an idea reiterated by China’s state news agency, Xinhua.

China’s pivotal role in supporting Russia economically following Western sanctions imposed after the Ukraine conflict has stirred debates. While China maintains claims of neutrality in the conflict, it has bolstered energy purchases from Russia and emerged as a crucial supplier of goods for the isolated Russian market.

The recent Chinese customs data disclosed an astounding trade figure of nearly $218.2 billion for the first 11 months of 2023, underscoring the ever-expanding economic interdependence between the two nations. 

Both countries solidified their collaboration in various sectors, from trade and transport to space exploration and military consultations, affirming a multifaceted and robust partnership.

The sentiments echoed by the leaders of both nations depict a strengthening camaraderie, with Putin praising the unprecedented cooperation and envisioning further trade escalation.
