Biden Weighs Aligning with Trump’s China Policy to Safeguard Electric Vehicle Ambitions

President Joe Biden is exploring a strategy reminiscent of his predecessor, Donald Trump, by contemplating an increase in tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

The action is perceived as an attempt to defend the administration’s lofty targets for electric vehicles and shield the home industry from China’s rising dominance in the market.

China’s supremacy in the electric vehicle industry poses a potential threat to the United States’ green energy objectives, prompting considerations within the Biden administration to raise tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

President Biden, known for his outspoken stance against what he deems as unfair Chinese trade practices, addressed the issue directly in November, stating, “China is determined to dominate the electric vehicle market by using unfair trade practices, but I will not let them. I promise you,” during an address to members of the United Auto Workers.

While the Biden administration has maintained several tariffs implemented during the Trump era, discussions are underway to potentially increase existing tariffs. The current tariff on Chinese electric vehicles stands at 25%, with a focus on curbing China’s influence in the global electric vehicle market.

President Joe Biden is exploring a strategy reminiscent of his predecessor, Donald Trump, by contemplating an increase in tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

Aside from targeting electric vehicles, there is speculation about broadening the scope to include other green energy products from China, such as solar products and electric vehicle batteries. This multifaceted approach aims to fortify the domestic industry and reduce dependence on foreign competition.

China, however, has strongly opposed any tariff hikes, warning that it could lead to a trade war with detrimental consequences.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stated that such actions would have no winners, emphasizing that China would closely monitor developments and take necessary measures to protect its lawful rights and interests.

As the Biden administration navigates the complex terrain of international trade relations, the potential tariff hike underscores the importance of balancing economic competition with the pursuit of domestic green energy goals.

The outcome of these deliberations will likely shape the trajectory of the US electric vehicle industry and its competitiveness on the global stage.
