North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered increased military readiness and expanded alliances, citing unprecedented provocations by the United States.

In a recent meeting of the ruling party, Kim outlined plans to intensify war preparations across multiple sectors. During the crucial gathering of the country’s ruling party, Kim Jong Un emphasized the urgency of bolstering North Korea’s military capabilities. 

Kim outlined specific actions for the People’s Army, the armaments industry, the nuclear weapons sector, and civil defense groups, according to a state media outlet, and urged them to accelerate their readiness for possible confrontation.

Moreover, Kim Jong Un underscored plans to strengthen strategic partnerships with anti-imperialist independent nations, signaling a potential shift in alliances to counter mounting pressures from the West. 

North Korea has notably cultivated ties with Russia, among others, while facing accusations from Washington about supplying military equipment to Moscow, which is embroiled in conflict with Ukraine.

Beyond military concerns, Kim delineated economic objectives for the forthcoming year. Describing it as a decisive year, he emphasized the need to fulfill the country’s five-year development plan and propel growth in key industrial sectors. 

Additionally, there was a call to stabilize agricultural production at elevated levels to address the persistent food shortages that have plagued North Korea for decades.

Despite a reported increase in crop output in 2023 due to favorable weather conditions, the country continues to grapple with food scarcity. 

The impact of COVID-19 border closures exacerbated existing food security concerns, as highlighted by international experts.

The 9th plenary meeting of the 8th central committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea served as a platform for reviewing the past year’s achievements. It included the consolidation of nuclear policy in the country’s constitution, the launch of a surveillance satellite, and the testing of a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

This meeting, which spans several days, serves as a critical forum for policy announcements, indicating Kim Jong Un’s strategic approach and priorities for the year ahead. The leader’s New Year’s speech is anticipated to offer further insights into North Korea’s trajectory amidst escalating tensions with the United States.
