Taylor Swift’s Inner Circle Reacts to New York Times Speculation on Her Sexuality

Taylor Swift’s sexuality is the topic of speculation discussed in a recent New York Times opinion piece by editor Anna Marks, sparking significant controversy and drawing the ire of the pop superstar’s associates, according to information obtained by CNN.

The 5,000-word article, published in The Times’ opinion section, carefully strings together a plethora of LGBTQ references found in Swift’s songs and performances. 

Marks suggests that Swift, through subtle cues and references, may have been signaling her identification with the queer community for years.

A source close to Swift, speaking anonymously to CNN, expressed dissatisfaction with the article, asserting that such speculations wouldn’t be permitted for male artists like Shawn Mendes. 

The source criticized the piece for being invasive, untrue, and inappropriate, questioning the journalistic boundaries crossed under the guise of an ‘opinion piece.’

Swift has previously embraced the LGBTQ community, actively supporting fans during debates over anti-gay legislation and promoting her concerts as safe spaces for LGBTQ individuals. 

However, she has consistently denied being a member of the LGBTQ community. 

In a 2019 interview with Vogue, Swift stated that she aimed to be a good ally in light of attacks on LGBTQ rights.

Times Probes Taylor Swift’s Queer Connection

Marks’ piece addresses Swift’s pro-LGBTQ stance but goes on to analyze Swift’s lyrics and actions, suggesting that she might be a part of the queer community. 

This approach by a reputable news organization like The Times to speculate on a public figure’s sexuality, especially one who has denied such insinuations, is considered highly unusual and has received criticism from readers.

Marks, anticipating backlash, addressed the controversial nature of the article within it, acknowledging that discussing a star’s potential queerness before a formal declaration might seem salacious. 

She argued that recognizing the possibility of queerness, while being aware of the difference between possibility and certainty, is essential to keep the signal of queerness alive in the collective imagination.

Swift’s associates criticized the article, prompting CNN to reach out to The Times for comment. The Times declined to comment directly on the criticism, instead pointing to Marks’ published essay on the matter.

While the op-ed raises questions about journalistic ethics and the appropriateness of speculating on an individual’s sexuality, it also highlights the challenges faced by high-profile figures when their personal lives become subjects of intense scrutiny.
