A critical move was made on Monday when the Florida Republican Party voted to remove Christian Ziegler from his chair role while a rape accusation against him is still being looked into.
This move comes after weeks of pressure for his resignation, highlighting the party’s commitment to accountability and maintaining public trust.
During a closed-door meeting in Tallahassee, the state party elected Evan Power, the vice chair, as the new chair. Power emphasized the need to close this chapter, move forward, and focus on winning future elections in Florida.
Late last year, Ziegler faced allegations of raping a woman with whom he had a consensual sexual relationship, alongside his wife, Bridget Ziegler, a co-founder of Moms for Liberty and a Sarasota County School Board member. Notably, Bridget Ziegler has not been implicated or commented publicly on the allegations against her husband.
While Sarasota police are investigating the sexual abuse claim, Christian Ziegler has not been formally charged with any crime. His attorney expressed confidence that once the investigation concludes, Ziegler will be exonerated.
Florida’s Political Strategy and Ethical Emphasis
The decision to remove Ziegler garnered support from key figures within the Republican Party, such as Michael Thompson, a Lee County Republican chairman, who emphasized the importance of accountability regardless of one’s position within the party or in public office.
Evan Power, stepping into his new role as chair, highlighted fundraising as a top priority, acknowledging that financial support is integral to the party’s operations. He emphasized the need to strengthen the party’s infrastructure at the county level to ensure continued success in elections.
Notably, before the formal removal, Ziegler had been suspended from his position in December, facing a reduction in salary and being stripped of his chairman duties following the seriousness of the accusation.
Governor Ron DeSantis and other leading Republicans had urged Ziegler to resign amid the investigation, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the need for him to focus on his defense.
