Seniors and individuals with disabilities residing in Wyandotte County and Kansas City, KS, now have the opportunity to validate their eligibility for the BPU PILOT Relief, property tax refund, utility, and sales tax rebate programs. 

The application process for tax rebates is open until April 15.

The Unified Government (UG) has officially initiated a community outreach effort to assist eligible individuals in applying for tax rebates related to their utilities and residences.

This year, there are modifications to the tax rebate programs from the State of Kansas. 

The Unified Government has provided updated qualifications and documentation requirements, accessible on their website at wycokck.org/taxrebates.

Utility, Sales Tax, and Property Rebate Programs

Individuals residing in Wyandotte County with an income not exceeding $40,500, and who will reach the age of 65 or be disabled on January 1, 2024, may potentially qualify for a refund on BPU PILOT charges if they are BPU customers or receive a portion of their property taxes as property owners.

Likewise, residents in Kansas City, KS, aged at least 65 or classified as disabled on January 1, 2024, with an income not exceeding $40,500, may be eligible for the program, entitling them to a rebate on franchise fees incurred from gas, Internet, cable, or phone bills. 

Eligible applicants can receive a $200 rebate for the 2023 sales tax.

How to Apply for Tax Rebate Programs?

In-Person

To ensure clarity on the application procedure and document prerequisites, the Unified Government will facilitate one-on-one appointments until April 15. 

Appointments will be accommodated at various community centers and business locations across Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, including:

  • City Hall, Office of the Clerk – 3rd Floor (Mon. – Fri.), 8:30 a.m. – 4p.m.
  • Beatrice L. Lee Community Center (Tuesdays), 9 a.m. – Noon
  • Area Agency on Aging (Tuesdays), 9 a.m. – 1p.m.
  • Argentine Community Center (Wednesdays/ 1st & 3rd Weeks), 9 a.m. – Noon
  • Turner Recreation Center (Wednesday/ Once Monthly), 11 a.m. – 2p.m.
  • Eisenhower Community Center (Thursdays), 9 a.m. – Noon
  • KCK Annex Building (Fridays), 8:30 a.m.– 4:30p.m.

Through Mail

Prospective applicants may submit their eligibility documents by mail to the UG Clerk’s Office for assessment (Office of the Clerk, 701 N 7th Street, Suite 323, Kansas City KS 66101). 

All documents will be promptly returned upon completion of the review process.
