The ex-president Donald Trump’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, has unpredictably left Trump’s legal team right before the E Jean Carroll case trial.
Carroll accused Trump of defamation in 2019, alleging sexual abuse in the mid-1990s. Tacopina, who successfully led a civil rape case for Carroll last year, officially resigned through court documents filed on Monday, pulling out from both the Carroll defamation case and the
New York fraud case involving Stormy Daniels and alleged falsification of business records.
Despite having accompanied Trump during his plea of not guilty in April 2023, Tacopina has not provided specific reasons for his sudden departure.
The withdrawal comes just a day before the commencement of the trial in the Carroll case, which aims to determine the damages Trump owes for defamatory statements about Carroll.
Notably, the trial is set to focus exclusively on damages, as Judge Lewis Kaplan emphasized that the statements made in 2019 and 2022 were substantially the same.
Trump’s Legal Team Struggles
Trump’s legal team, facing numerous challenges, including 34 first-degree felony charges in the fraud case, has encountered setbacks in attempts to delay court proceedings.
Despite claims of presidential immunity, countersuits, and various postponement requests, Judge Kaplan and the US Court of Appeals have consistently denied these efforts.
