After months of opposition to a public hearing, President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, has agreed to provide a private deposition before House Republicans.
The House Oversight Committee officially confirmed the agreement on Thursday, scheduling the private deposition for February 28, marking a significant development in the ongoing investigations into Hunter Biden’s overseas business dealings.
The decision follows a series of interviews conducted with Biden family members and associates, setting the stage for Hunter Biden’s testimony.
The statement from Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), Chair of the Oversight Committee, and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Chair of the Judiciary panel, expressed their anticipation for the upcoming deposition.
This breakthrough comes after months of contentious exchanges between Hunter Biden and House Republicans, who have sought to establish connections between his overseas business dealings and his father, President Joe Biden.
Initially, Republicans had planned to send a contempt resolution against Hunter Biden to the House floor this week but called off the move on Tuesday, allowing for additional time for negotiations between the parties.
Hunter Biden’s Defiant Stance
The legal battle began when Hunter Biden was first subpoenaed in November, with the demand for a private appearance by mid-December.
However, he and his attorneys resisted, citing concerns about selective leaks and manipulation by Republicans, insisting that Hunter Biden would only testify in a public setting.
The standoff escalated as Republicans rejected these terms, leading to Hunter Biden’s two separate appearances at the US Capitol, where he refused to testify privately. Instead, he delivered statements to the media defending his business affairs and criticizing the investigations into him and his family.
The ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Biden, initiated in September, has been extensively focused on Hunter Biden’s international business affairs. Despite this focus, no direct evidence has been uncovered implicating President Biden in any wrongdoing related to his son’s work.
The upcoming private deposition may provide crucial insights into the ongoing investigations and their potential implications for the Biden family.
