In a shocking incident on Sunday, at least 28 people were killed and 30 others, including two children, were injured near a market in Donetsk, a city in eastern Ukraine under Russian control.
Russian officials promptly accused Ukraine of orchestrating the attack, while Kyiv vehemently denied any involvement.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement alleging that multiple launch rocket systems targeted a market and shops in Donetsk’s Kirovsky district.
Moscow blamed Kyiv for a barbaric terrorist act against the civilian population of Russia, pointing the finger at Avdiivka as the source of the shelling. Ukraine’s armed forces, however, refuted the claims, asserting they were not responsible for the assault.
Despite the denial, Russia insists that Ukraine must be held accountable for the loss of Ukrainian lives.
The incident comes amidst escalating tensions between the two nations, with Russia having caused thousands of civilian casualties following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s Investigative Committee initiated an investigation, vowing to punish all those involved in the attack.
Ukraine Under Siege
Denis Pushilin, the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, revealed that the assault occurred on the busiest day of the week for the area. Search teams were deployed to locate weapon fragments.
Pushilin reported at least 27 civilian deaths and 25 injuries in the Kirovsky district. Another fatality occurred in a separate part of Donetsk city due to shelling, with five additional people wounded in Russian-occupied areas. Residential buildings, a school, and shops across the region also sustained damage.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attacks on Russian-controlled parts of Donetsk, emphasizing that assaults on civilians and infrastructure violate international humanitarian law and must cease immediately.
Donetsk, one of four Ukrainian regions claimed by Moscow in 2022, faces heightened tensions as the frontline of the war remains largely static. Ukraine’s counteroffensive has faltered, leading to increased pressure from Russian forces along the 1,000-kilometer frontline.
As the conflict intensifies, fears grow that Russia’s forces may escalate operations in strategic locations, including the embattled town of Avdiivka. The situation remains fluid, with both sides preparing for heightened hostilities in the days to come.
