Online retail giant eBay Inc. is set to cut approximately 1,000 jobs, constituting about 9% of its full-time workforce, as part of a strategic restructuring effort.

CEO Jamie Iannone shared this decision with employees in a message on Tuesday, citing the need for the company to align its teams for increased agility and quicker decision-making in a slowing economy.

In the message, Iannone acknowledged the difficulty of the changes but expressed confidence in the company becoming stronger through collaborative efforts.

The layoffs will be conducted through Zoom calls with affected employees, providing a remote and private setting for these conversations. Additionally, eBay plans to reduce its contracts within the alternate workforce over the coming months.

The move by eBay follows a trend in the tech industry, with several companies implementing layoffs after rapid hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Companies like Google, TikTok, Riot Games, and Amazon have all announced job cuts to streamline operations and improve financial outcomes. Google, for instance, is laying off employees in hardware, voice assistance, and engineering teams, while Amazon is cutting jobs in its Prime Video and MGM Studios unit.

eBay, headquartered in San Jose, California, acknowledges the challenging macroeconomic environment and external pressures, prompting the need for a more efficient organizational structure.

The company has also faced internal challenges, including a recent $3 million fine to resolve US criminal charges related to a harassment campaign orchestrated by employees against a Massachusetts couple.

Despite these challenges, eBay’s CEO remains optimistic about the company’s ability to navigate the shifting economic landscape. Iannone emphasized the importance of better organizing teams to enhance speed and nimbleness, positioning eBay for sustained success amid external pressures.

As the tech industry adapts to a changing economic environment, eBay’s decision to streamline its workforce is part of a broader trend in the sector, where companies are reevaluating their staffing levels and operational strategies to ensure long-term resilience and growth.
