Mexico Raises Alarm over Presence of US Military-Grade Arms in Cartel Operations

Mexico’s top diplomat has called for an urgent investigation into the alarming trend of US military-grade weapons ending up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels. 

Foreign Relations Secretary Alicia Bárcena emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the need for swift action to address the issue.

Reports indicate that Mexico’s army has seized a significant arsenal of weaponry, including belt-fed machine guns, rocket launchers, and grenades, not intended for civilian use in the United States. 

The proliferation of such high-caliber arms presents a formidable challenge to Mexican authorities already contending with sophisticated tactics employed by drug cartels, including homemade armored vehicles and bomb-dropping drones.

Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval revealed troubling statistics, indicating the possession of rocket launchers by various cartels, underscoring the urgency of the situation. 

While the origin of these weapons is not definitively confirmed, Mexican officials have raised concerns with US counterparts, prompting a pledge of cooperation from US Ambassador Ken Salazar. 

Mexico’s Ongoing Battle Against Arms Trafficking

The influx of military-grade weapons into Mexico poses multifaceted challenges, with potential routes of acquisition ranging from Central American conflicts to black market transactions. 

Despite Mexico’s ongoing efforts to combat arms trafficking, including legal actions against US manufacturers and distributors, the issue persists, exacerbating violence and instability.

In a related development, Mexico seeks modifications to the US CBP One mobile application for asylum-seekers, advocating for expanded coverage to mitigate overcrowding at northern border cities. 

Additionally, discussions with US officials revealed plans for sanctions against transportation companies facilitating irregular migration, underscoring the complex dynamics of bilateral cooperation on immigration issues.
