Fatal Hyena Encounter: Man Killed and Eaten in Proximity to Kenyan Capital’s University

In a tragic event near Nairobi, Kenya, a man fell victim to a brutal hyena attack, highlighting escalating safety concerns in areas bordering wildlife habitats.

The man, identified as Anthony Pasha, met his untimely demise while innocently collecting firewood. His remains were discovered by wildlife authorities amidst their investigation into a series of attacks plaguing the region. 

The severity of the situation was underscored by another victim, Kevin Mwendwa, an engineering student who narrowly escaped with his life, albeit losing a thumb in the encounter.

The proximity of Nairobi National Park to populated areas has long been a cause for concern. The incident occurred near a university campus, prompting students to demand better safety measures. In response, protests erupted, amplifying the urgency for action.

According to a student, The university is not safe because we are near the national park, which perfectly captures the general concern felt by the public. Protests featured cries for government action, with calls for limits on the movement of wildlife gaining momentum.

Hyena Den Identification Efforts Underway

The Kenya Wildlife Service swiftly responded to the crisis, euthanizing one of the hyenas suspected to be involved in the attacks. 

Attention has also shifted towards examining the carcass to ascertain if the animal carried diseases such as rabies, which could exacerbate the threat to human safety.

Efforts are underway to identify potential hyena dens in the vicinity, as authorities grapple with the resurgence of such attacks. The absence of a fence along the southern border of Nairobi National Park exacerbates the challenge, leaving communities vulnerable to wildlife incursions.

Hyenas attacks on the outskirts of Nairobi have become distressingly frequent, prompting authorities to issue guidelines on how to navigate encounters with these predators.
