Former FBI official Charles McGonigal sentenced to over two years for involvement in fraudulent dealings with an Albanian government-linked businessman.

The sentencing, handed down by US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, reflects the severity of McGonigal’s actions, which prosecutors described as a betrayal of public trust driven by greed.

McGonigal, 55, served as a supervisor of national security operations for the FBI in New York before retiring in 2018. Prosecutors revealed that in 2017, McGonigal accepted approximately $225,000 from an individual associated with an Albanian intelligence agency. This transaction, which he failed to report, led to suspicions of advancing Albanian interests within the US

Expressing remorse during the sentencing, McGonigal acknowledged his mistakes and the damage caused by his actions. However, Judge Kollar-Kotelly emphasized that while his remorse appeared genuine, it did not mitigate the harm inflicted by his breach of trust.

Prosecutors highlighted the egregious nature of McGonigal’s offenses, particularly as a law enforcement officer entrusted with upholding the law. They recommended a prison term of two years and six months for the Washington case alone, underscoring the severity of his actions motivated by personal gain.

McGonigal was sentenced to 50 months in prison for conspiring to breach sanctions against Russia in a different case in New York, and this punishment is in line with that term. 

His defense team made the case against more jail time by pointing out the serious repercussions he has already experienced, such as the destruction of his family, career, and reputation.

McGonigal’s plea of guilty to concealing material facts reflects an acknowledgment of his failure to uphold the standards expected of an FBI official. His actions, characterized by prosecutors as prioritizing greed over service to his country, underscore the seriousness of his offenses.
