The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews is setting new records for goal scoring this season as he continues to rewrite the history books.

On Wednesday, the star forward notched his 50th goal in just his 54th game, solidifying his status as the fastest US-born player to achieve this milestone in a single season.

Matthews achieved the feat at 5:01 into the first period against the Arizona Coyotes, surpassing his own previous record of 50 goals in 62 games, set during the 2021-22 season, as well as Kevin Stevens’ record from the 1992-93 season.

In doing so, Matthews also became the ninth-fastest player in NHL history to reach 50 goals in a season, accomplishing the feat in just 55 team games. The significance of this milestone was not lost on Matthews, who hails from Arizona and grew up cheering for the Coyotes.

The achievement took place at Mullett Arena, adding an extra layer of sentimentality for the prolific scorer. Reflecting on the possibility of making history in front of his family and friends, Matthews remained focused on his team’s success, emphasizing the Leafs’ four-game winning streak.

Despite his personal accolades, Matthews maintained his commitment to executing and contributing to his team’s performance.

Matthews’ recent dominance extends beyond his 50-goal milestone, with remarkable consistency and productivity throughout the season.

Jonas Siegel of The Athletic highlighted Matthews’ exceptional form, noting that his 36 goals since December 2 would rank him second in the NHL for the entire season, showcasing his unparalleled scoring prowess.

As Matthews continues his remarkable campaign, he emerges as a frontrunner for the coveted MVP title, with his sights set on a rare 70-goal season.

With his current pace projecting towards 75 goals, Matthews aims to join the elite ranks of players achieving such feats, reminiscent of the legendary seasons of Teemu Selanne and Alexander Mogilny in 1992-93.
