Detroit Pistons center Isaiah Stewart is facing a three-game suspension following a pregame altercation with Phoenix Suns’ Drew Eubanks, as announced by the NBA on Thursday.
The suspension will sideline Stewart for crucial matchups against the Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic, and the New York Knicks, with his eligibility to return set for the game against the Chicago Bulls on Feb. 27.
The incident occurred on Feb. 14 at Footprint Center when Stewart punched Eubanks in the face during an altercation in the back tunnels.
The altercation reportedly unfolded with the two players chest-to-chest, culminating in Stewart delivering a punch that connected with Eubanks’ mouth. The altercation was captured on camera, leading to a review by the NBA.
Drew Eubanks shed light on the confrontation, explaining that Isaiah Stewart intercepted him while heading back to the locker room and struck him after a verbal exchange.
Isaiah Stewart’s On-Court History
The Suns, in response, released a statement denouncing the unprovoked attack on Eubanks, emphasizing that acts of violence are unacceptable, pledging support for their player and collaboration with law enforcement and the NBA.
This is not the first instance of Isaiah Stewart being involved in on-court altercations. In 2021, he received a two-game suspension for charging at LeBron James after a confrontation that left James bloodied.
Moreover, during the year 2023, Stewart faced ejection from a game after forcibly pushing Patrick Beverley to the floor in an altercation on the court.
Stewart’s troubles extend beyond the basketball court, as he is scheduled to appear in Phoenix Municipal Court on Friday to face a misdemeanor assault charge related to the recent incident.
The repeat offenses and legal ramifications add a layer of concern for the Pistons, as they will be without their center for a crucial stretch of games and must address the disciplinary challenges Stewart poses both on and off the court.
