Giants’ Trade Plans: Snell and Chapman on Radar as March Approaches

339

The Giants are actively exploring trades for pitchers Blake Snell and Matt Chapman as the March deadline approaches, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

According to sources cited by Slusser, there is an equal likelihood of acquiring one of these players, with the chances estimated to be approximately 50-50.

The Giants’ need for a pitcher is thought to be more urgently addressed by Blake Snell. The Giants signed reliever Jordan Hicks with the idea that he would eventually enter the rotation because the group behind Cy Young runner-up Logan Webb is unnamed.

However, Hicks has limited MLB innings experience, with his highest being 77 2/3 in his 2018 rookie season. Beyond Hicks, the options are less experienced, with pitching prospect Kyle Harrison having only seven MLB games under his belt.

Strengthening the Giants’ Pitching

The Giants face challenges with injuries to pitchers like Alex Cobb and Robbie Ray, pushing the team to explore external options. Despite the setbacks in the rotation, a starting trio of Webb,

Snell, and Harrison could potentially elevate the Giants to compete for a playoff spot.

The critical question remains the agreement on a suitable price point. While Snell has not found a team willing to meet his asking price, there are indications that he may consider a short-term offer with an opt-out clause, similar to Cody Bellinger’s recent deal with the Cubs.

Despite concerns about replicating his exceptional 2023 season, where he posted a 2.25 earned run average and a 1.23 mark from June onward, Snell’s potential addition could significantly boost the Giants’ pitching staff.

As the trade deadline approaches, the Giants face the challenge of negotiating a deal that aligns with Snell’s expectations.

The result of these negotiations has the potential to significantly influence the composition of the team’s pitching rotation and ultimately impact their ability to compete effectively in the upcoming season.
