Recently departed New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones hails from Jacksonville, Florida, so he should have no trouble settling into his new home for the upcoming 2024 season.

The Jaguars and Patriots are in the process of completing a deal to send Jones to Jacksonville in exchange for a late-round pick.

The individual requested to remain anonymous as they are not authorized to disclose the trade.

The agreement marks the conclusion of a turbulent period of quarterback performance in New England, sparking speculation about Jones being traded this offseason.

Jones had a strong beginning in 2021, but struggled to maintain the same level of success in the subsequent years.

FOXBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS – JANUARY 07: Mac Jones #10 of the New England Patriots looks on after a game against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium on January 07, 2024 in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The Jaguars are set to acquire former first-round pick Mac Jones from the Patriots in exchange for a late-round draft pick.

The trade is contingent upon Jones undergoing a physical examination, which is scheduled to take place after the commencement of the new league year on Wednesday, March 13.

Following a promising debut season in New England, Jones experienced a decline in performance during the 2022 and 2023 seasons under the guidance of offensive coordinators Matt Patricia and Bill O’Brien.

Throughout his tenure with the Patriots, Jones was occasionally sidelined, although head coach Bill Belichick declined to confirm whether these benchings were performance-related.

In his new role with the Jaguars, Jones is slated to serve as the backup to Trevor Lawrence, his fellow 2021 NFL Draft classmate who was selected first overall by the Jaguars.

Lawrence delivered a commendable performance in his rookie season, tallying 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while guiding the Jaguars to a 9-8 record and a second-place finish in the AFC South.

This trade provides the Jaguars with two young quarterbacks that they can develop, but there’s a catch.

The Jaguars have until May 2 to decide on Lawrence’s fifth-year option, but it would come as a surprise if Jones also has his option exercised.

That would result in Jones becoming a free agent after the 2024 season.
