Curious Minnesota Vikings supporters are eagerly awaiting news on quarterback Kirk Cousins’ potential free agency decision, which should be revealed shortly.

Based on reports from Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis at The Athletic, the organization anticipates hearing from Cousins on Sunday night.

The contract remains valid until Wednesday, giving the Vikings an opportunity to extend it before the dead cap affects their 2024 salary cap.

Minnesota and Cousins are still in discussions but have not yet come to an agreement on a new deal.

It’s important to highlight that his previous two contracts were fully guaranteed, a practice the organization may not repeat.

Should Cousins hit free agency, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him join the Atlanta Falcons. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio is considering relocating his family to Atlanta, where his wife, Julie, is originally from.

Additionally, the Falcons possess $41.23M in cap space, sufficient to secure a top-tier quarterback.

Vikings Ready for Rebuild with Draft Options

It wouldn’t be great for the Vikings to lose Cousins, but they are in a good position to rebuild if necessary.

Minnesota holds the 11th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, which features a strong group of quarterbacks.

Tankathon reports that J.J. McCarthy, credited with leading the Wolverines to their first national championship in 26 years, is expected to be drafted.

Cousins, who is set to turn 36 before the commencement of the upcoming season and endured a season-concluding Achilles tear in 2023, remains a four-time Pro Bowler.

However, the Vikings are likely hesitant to surpass a predetermined financial threshold for an aging quarterback with only one playoff victory in six seasons with the team.
