Why Marquise Brown Fits Seamlessly with the Chiefs: Three Key Reasons

273

The Kansas City Chiefs made an exciting move on Thursday night, reaching an agreement on a one-year deal with wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown.

Brown’s impressive performance in 2023 with the Arizona Cardinals, where he recorded 51 catches for 574 yards and four touchdowns, makes him a valuable addition to the Chiefs offense, particularly for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Three Reasons Why Marquise Brown Fits Chiefs

Here are three compelling reasons why Brown could be an excellent addition to the Chiefs, who are in need of a wide receiver.

Marquise Brown Should Aids Chiefs in Resolving Issues

GLENDALE, ARIZONA – DECEMBER 17: Marquise Brown #2 of the Arizona Cardinals runs a route during an NFL football game against the San Francisco 49ers at State Farm Stadium on December 17, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona.

In 2023, the Chiefs faced a challenging situation with a high number of dropped passes, which ultimately led them to lead the NFL with an average of 2.6 drops per game.

Although it didn’t ultimately hinder their chances of another Super Bowl victory, it was evident that the team made it a priority to address this issue during the offseason.

It’s worth noting that Brown has an impressive track record when it comes to catching passes. Although it may not impress everyone, this player, who was selected in the first round, is known for having incredibly reliable hands.

In his previous season with the Arizona Cardinals, his drop rate was an impressive 3%, which aligns with his career average of 3.6%.

Last season, quarterback Patrick Mahomes displayed clear frustration with his receivers, indicating a loss of confidence in the unit.

However, given Brown’s impressive resume, it won’t be long before earning the trust of the two-time MVP.

Chiefs’ Offense Set to Showcase Marquise Brown

Brown has yet to experience the benefits of playing in an offense that prioritizes passing during his five-year NFL career. That’s about to change with the Chiefs.

Playing with Mahomes as your quarterback is guaranteed to elevate your performance.

However, according to analyst Warren Sharp, Kansas City’s offensive philosophy provides Brown with the greatest chance of success.

During his time with the Baltimore Ravens (29th) and Arizona Cardinals (16th), Brown was part of offenses that had pass rates of 51% and 54%.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs have consistently been the top team in the league since 2019, with an impressive 64% pass rate in 2023.

Chiefs’ Steal Deal

Given the uncertainty surrounding cornerback L’Jarius Sneed’s future, it was widely speculated that the Chiefs would need to address this situation before making any significant moves in free agency. Fortunately, Brown is available at a low cost.

As per Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star, Brown’s contract is for one year and has a base value of $7M.

However, it has the potential to increase to $11M if he achieves certain incentives.

The $11M that the Chiefs might potentially pay Brown is approximately equal to the amount they awarded Marquez Valdes-Scantling per season under a three-year, $30M contract.

Additionally, the contracts for wide receivers Gabe Davis and Darnell Mooney this offseason were for a shorter duration and lower value compared to the one in question.
