PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA – MARCH 14: Jordan Spieth of the United States and Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland look on from the 16th green during the first round of THE PLAYERS Championship on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on March 14, 2024 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Following the shot, he opted to take a penalty drop near the hazard.

However, Spieth expressed some doubt about the placement of the ball drop, suggesting that it may have bounced below the red hazard line.

This didn’t sit well with McIlroy, as it meant he would have to take the next shot from the tee box.

Both McIlroy and Spieth strongly held their positions, resulting in a passionate debate on the fairway that lasted approximately 8 minutes.

“I believe it did bounce above the red boundary line,” McIlroy stated confidently. Meanwhile, Spieth responded, stating that those who witnessed the incident are confident that it landed below the line.

McIlroy Questions Spieth on Fairway Dispute

“Who is the subject of your discussion?” McIlroy inquired of Spieth, who then gestured towards the cameras that had captured the entire incident.

Subsequently, the intensity of the conversation began to rise.

Although Spieth had no intention of affecting McIlroy’s score, he believed he had a fair resolution to the disagreement.

“The individuals from the media at the tee were mentioning it, so I figured, ‘Why not verify it to ensure you don’t make an incorrect drop?'”

Ultimately, McIlroy decided to take the shot from the rough, as there was insufficient evidence to back up Spieth’s assertion.

However, they have a history of disagreements over their opinions, like last month’s incident where they had differing viewpoints on investment from Saudi Arabian investors.
