Manchester United faces a setback in their midfield lineup ahead of Sunday’s highly anticipated FA Cup encounter with Liverpool, following an injury update from the player’s national team camp.
Casemiro, initially set to link up with the Brazil squad for upcoming friendly matches against England and Spain, has been struck by a fresh injury blow, as disclosed by manager Dorival Jr. just hours before the crucial showdown between Manchester United and Liverpool.
Speaking on the matter, Dorival Jr. cited a list compiled by the Brazilian national team’s technical committee, revealing that a significant number of players, including Casemiro, have been ruled out due to injuries sustained at their respective clubs. Among the casualties is also Alisson, the goalkeeper, sidelined with a severe hamstring injury.
In response to Casemiro’s absence, Dorival Jr. announced the inclusion of Pepe, a midfielder currently plying his trade at Porto, to the national squad.
Although Manchester United is yet to officially confirm the extent of Casemiro’s injury, indications suggest his absence from the upcoming FA Cup quarter-final encounter against Liverpool.
Ten Hag Eyes Midfield Shift with Casemiro
Despite enduring a challenging season in terms of form, the 32-year-old midfielder remains a pivotal figure for Manchester United, as emphasized by manager Erik ten Hag, who views him as a fundamental starter in midfield. Casemiro has featured prominently in all 21 of his appearances during the 2023/24 campaign, with only Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay logging more minutes among United’s midfield contingent.
Considering the possibility of Casemiro being not accessible, Ten Hag might consider Kobbie Mainoo and Sofyan Amrabat to take on the responsibilities of the deep-lying midfield positions. In recent matches against Manchester City and Everton, McTominay and Fernandes have been playing in advanced positions. It is expected that they will continue in these roles, until there are any concerns about Rasmus Hojlund’s fitness.
However, there’s optimism surrounding Hojlund’s fitness, paving the way for McTominay to partner Mainoo in midfield, thereby reverting to a 4-2-3-1 formation.
In regard to Mason Mount’s return to full training, there is some good news for Manchester United. However, it seems unlikely that the midfielder, who was previously a target for Liverpool, will be given a starting position in the upcoming fixtures.
