After a remarkable 15-year tenure, David Six, the esteemed head coach of the Hampton University Lady Pirates women’s basketball team, has announced his retirement. 

Six has been a consistent force for the Lady Pirates since his appointment as interim head coach in 2009, a role he later turned into a multi-year contract.

The announcement of Six’s retirement comes at a time of transition for the university, following the recent departure of Edward “Buck” Joyner, the former longtime head coach of the men’s basketball team. 

With both coaching positions undergoing changes, the Pirates find themselves in a season of transformation.

Hampton University had been aware of Six’s impending retirement well in advance. In anticipation of this significant moment, the university prepared a farewell video commemorating the highlights of the women’s basketball team’s journey under Six’s guidance. 

The video served as a tribute to Six’s impactful career, concluding with a graphic showcasing his numerous accomplishments with the team.

During his 15 years of service, Six led the Lady Pirates to impressive achievements on the court. 

The team recorded a notable 264-185 record and clinched the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship title seven times under his leadership. 

Six’s coaching prowess earned him the MEAC Coach of the Year award three times, while also being recognized as the MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Coach on six occasions.
