Trevor Bauer has announced his intention to pitch for the Mexican team Diablos Rojos in their upcoming Sunday exhibition match against the New York Yankees.

The recipient of the 2020 NL Cy Young Award seeks to make a return to Major League Baseball after an absence of three years, following a prolonged suspension by MLB and his subsequent release from the Los Angeles Dodgers, prompted by allegations of sexual assault leveled against him by a woman.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – JUNE 28: Trevor Bauer #27 of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitches in the sixth inning against the San Francisco Giants at Dodger Stadium on June 28, 2021 in Los Angeles, California.

On Monday, Bauer, aged 33, conveyed through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he has also committed to pitching in five games for Diablos Rojos from April 11 to May 8.

He stated that this arrangement is in place “in lieu of a traditional spring training period” and is deemed the optimal method for him to maintain readiness for pitching duties.

The New York Yankees are scheduled to participate in a series of split-squad exhibition games against Diablos Rojos on Saturday and Sunday at Mexico City’s Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium.

Bauer’s Legal and Suspension Saga in MLB

Trevor Bauer has not pitched in Major League Baseball since he was placed on administrative leave by MLB in July of 2021, subsequent to allegations made by a woman accusing him of assault during two separate incidents at his residence in Pasadena.

Bauer refuted these accusations, asserting that the encounters were consensual.

Prosecutors opted not to pursue charges, a decision made in February 2022.

Additionally, the woman initiated a lawsuit against Bauer, who in turn filed a countersuit.

However, the two parties resolved their legal dispute through a settlement reached last autumn.

Bauer received an unprecedented suspension of 324 games from Major League Baseball, though an independent arbitrator later reduced the sanction to 194 games in December 2022. Following the conclusion of his suspension, the Los Angeles Dodgers released him, and he went unclaimed by any other team.
