Aaron Donald decided to stop his stellar 10-year NFL career this week, igniting immediate debate about his place among the league’s all-time greats.

These conversations occurred even within his own household. The Rams posted a video of Donald and his wife, Erica, discussing his legacy while sitting in his boyhood home. 

The conversation started with Erica asking Aaron, “Are you the greatest of all time?”

In answer, Donald graciously acknowledged his status, stating, “I believe in my era, but everyone was different. 

You’ve had men like Ray Lewis, who were the best at their time, Polamalu, a Pittsburgh native, and Lawrence Taylor. It’s difficult to explain because the game has evolved so much.

Donald clearly understands the excellence of those who came before him, as well as the influence of different eras on the game. He honors luminaries like Ray Lewis, Troy Polamalu, and Lawrence Taylor, recognizing that brilliance cannot be simply compared across football eras.

Donald’s Humble Homage to Defensive Legends

Donald acknowledges other outstanding defensive players, demonstrating his humility and respect for the game’s history. 

He finds himself in the company of legends like Ray Lewis, Lawrence Taylor, Reggie White, Dick Butkus, as well as Mean Joe Greene. 

This places him among the top defensive players in NFL history.

Looking ahead, Donald is almost certain to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. 

The Class of 2029 will accept him as a member, cementing his place among the all-time greats.
