Tennessee defeated Creighton in a tough matchup that demonstrated the tenacity and will of both teams in the Sweet 16 to guarantee their place in the Elite Eight.
The Vols’ perseverance was on display as they won 82-75 in spite of a close game and Creighton’s late rally.
Early in the game, both teams traded blows, with Creighton leading by a slim margin (35–34) at the break. However, Tennessee came alive in the second half, putting on a stunning 18-0 run that gave them a commanding 55-39 lead.
The Vols’ strong defense and accurate three-point shooting gave the impression that they were in control of the game.
However, Creighton wasn’t prepared to give up just yet. Late in the game, the Bluejays were able to rally and reduce the gap to just three points thanks to a calculated defensive switch to a zone defense. Nevertheless, Tennessee’s ability to remain composed under duress was crucial as they ended the game with a 17–13 run to win.
Dominant Performances by Tennessee’s Stars
Great players’ clutch efforts were the reason Tennessee triumphed. Leading the way was All-America candidate Dalton Knecht, who demonstrated his versatility on both ends of the court with an amazing stat line of 24 points, five rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one block.
With multiple huge three-pointers, Josiah-Jordan James scored 17 points, while point guard Zakai Zeigler added 18 points and six assists.
A crucial aspect of the game was Tennessee’s excellent ball security, as they made only four errors compared to Creighton’s nine. Their disciplined approach and efficient three-point shooting proved to be the difference-maker in a fiercely contested game.
Tenacity and accuracy from Tennessee proved too much for Creighton, even though they shot almost 48% from beyond the arc. Even though Creighton’s Baylor Scheierman scored a team-high 25 points, the Vols won and advanced to their second Elite Eight in program history.
Tennessee will attempt to build on this arduous victory as they continue their quest for championship glory, with a matchup against top-seeded Purdue looming in the Midwest regional final.
