Canelo Alvarez Faces Tough Challenge from Jaime Munguia, Says Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has won nineteen world titles in his 23-year career, including middleweight, super middleweight, and super welterweight, since making his debut in 2001. Even with his stellar record, some believe Jaime Munguia, Canelo’s upcoming opponent, has what it takes to break his winning streak—including against one of his most well-known rivals.
Finally, after months of controversy and provocations from both sides, Canelo and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. squared up. The bout was held in front of 20,510 people at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alvarez prevailed 120–108 in a unanimous judgment.
Chavez Jr. Prefers Munguia for Fight Over Canelo Alvarez
Alvarez shifted his focus on Gennady Golovkin following a contentious bout between the two fighters. Chavez Jr.’s addiction and personal problems negatively impacted his career. Chavez Jr. expected seven years after the fight that Alvarez would face an uphill opponent, but the Mexican multiple champion’s prognosis is not good.
Despite the knowledge that Julio Cesar Chavez, the son of the well-known boxer, accepted Canelo’s enormous appeal on a national and international scale, he chose to fight Jaime Munguia, the opponent for their next fight on May 4 in Las Vegas.
Because of Munguia’s younger age and better fighting technique under legendary trainer Freddy Roach, Chavez Jr. preferred him above Canelo. He gave Munguia more confidence by pointing out his noticeable improvement in each battle. However, because of his disposition and the fact that he likes to battle Munguia, he still favors Canelo.Even with his 19 championships, Chavez Jr. does not think Alvarez is a great fighter.
He feels that since his bout with Munguia in 2017, Alvarez’s style has not changed, and he is prepared to give Munguia the advantage of the doubt since he feels that Alvarez has become “stuck” in that regard.
