This week, the Washington Spirit made a big move when they formally announced that they had signed Colombian midfielder Leicy Santos.

Under the guidance of departing Barcelona head coach Jonatan Giraldez, the 27-year-old is scheduled to join the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) squad in the summer and become a focal point of their on-field rebuild.

Santos signed a three-year contract with the Spirit and will go to the US in June, having completed her Liga F season responsibilities with Atletico Madrid.

Experienced on the international front, Santos was instrumental in Colombia’s historic run at the 2018 Women’s World Cup, as they advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to England in a fierce match.

This week, the Washington Spirit made a big move when they formally announced that they had signed Colombian midfielder Leicy Santos.

Santos made a lasting impression on the competition with a goal that demonstrated her talent and adaptability on the pitch.

The Spirit have big intentions to restructure their team after losing out on the NWSL playoffs in recent years, and Santos is a part of that.

The addition of Giraldez as head coach, who will bring his experience to the team after his contract with Barcelona expires in June, gives their rebuilding ambitions even more impetus.

The Spirit’s offensive potential is expected to increase significantly with Santos joining an aggressive roster that already includes players with talent like Ashley Hatch and Trinity Rodman.

Despite the Spirit’s dismal 2024 campaign debut, its offensive skills have shown potential. They have shown intent and inventiveness in their play, even though they are mediocre in some areas, such as shots and shots on goal percentage.

Washington Spirit’s Standout Performances

They are presently impressively ranked third in the NWSL for predicted goals, indicating their ability to successfully convert opportunities into goals.

The Spirit have also benefited from individual performances, as Rodman has become the club’s all-time assist leader and is topping the assist statistics.

Ouleymata Sarr, a forward, has demonstrated her ability to score goals; she is among the league’s best players in terms of shots and predicted goals.

The Spirit’s offensive line is starting to take shape, and players like Hatch and rookie midfielder Croix Bethune are helping to make a big impact on the league.

Santos’s presence is anticipated to give the Spirit’s midfield more inventiveness and energy. Her experience and skill level enable her to play a variety of positions, making her an invaluable complement to the club.

The Spirit’s quest to succeed in the NWSL as they strive to raise their game and compete at the highest level has advanced significantly with the signing of Santos.
