Michael Penix Jr.’s Draft Stock Soars: Insider Insights Revealed

In the latest edition of the “Eye On Foxborough” podcast, NFL analyst Jeff Howe from The Athletic discussed the potential draft position of Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Based on Howe, Penix Jr. could be selected as the fifth or sixth player in his position in the first round.

“There is a chance that we could see up to five quarterbacks drafted within the first 12 to 13 picks,” remarked Howe, as reported by Lauren Campbell of MassLive. “Michael Penix’s draft stock experienced a significant fluctuation, from potentially being a top prospect to a disappointing performance in the national championship game, causing his value to regress to a lower range.”

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA – MARCH 2: Michael Penix #QB08 of Washington participates in a drill during the NFL Combine at the Lucas Oil Stadium on March 2, 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Penix finished 27-of-51 pass attempts for 255 yards, including one touchdown and two interceptions, during the 34-13 defeat in the national title game against Michigan.

Although the draft stock of Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy has increased since that contest, Penix has apparently made a strong impression on multiple clubs at the scouting combine.

“I spoke with a team (Monday) who mentioned that Penix has the potential to be a first-round pick once again, or even a top half of the first round-pick. They believe there are several aspects of his game that make him an attractive prospect.” Howe carried on during the podcast.

It is widely believed that the Chicago Bears will select USC quarterback Caleb Williams as the first pick in the draft.

The Washington Commanders hold the second overall selection and have been connected to McCarthy, LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, and North Carolina signal-caller Drake Maye.

The New England Patriots are projected to select either Daniels, Maye, or McCarthy with the third overall pick.

Additionally, there is speculation that the Denver Broncos may trade up to secure one of these players if they are still available in the top five.

Raiders Eye Michael Penix in Round 2

In a recent mock draft, Field Yates of ESPN projected that Denver would select Bo Nix from Oregon as the fifth quarterback chosen with the 12th overall pick.

Penix was projected to be selected by the Las Vegas Raiders in the second round at pick No. 36.

Penix’s draft stock has been fluctuating due to his history of multiple injuries during his college career, including two torn anterior cruciate ligaments and shoulder injuries.

During Washington’s pro day, Penix impressed NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated with his speed in the 40-yard dash.

Breer noted that despite having two torn ACLs, Penix still showcased his ability to run fast.
