Mike Johnson Proposes Marjorie Taylor Greene for an Adviser Position and Meets with Trump.
People who know about the plans said that on Friday, former president Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson will host a discussion on election integrity at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
Embattled House Speaker Mike Johnson to Meet with Trump:
House Speaker Mike Johnson is racing to Florida this week to meet with President Trump with his career on the line. To get closer to the MAGA forces that now control the GOP, Johnson has extended an invitation to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a member of the far-right, to join his own “kitchen cabinet.” The abrupt actions on Wednesday coincided with the House’s latest impasse and disarray.
The Republicans in the House are in disarray, unable to cooperate to advance party agendas through Congress, and witnessing their majority evaporate day by day with little to show for their fifteen months in office.
Shortly after Trump encouraged them to “kill” the measure, Johnson’s Republican majority destroyed it, making it impossible for him to enact a national security monitoring law. Simultaneously, however, the speaker was being cautioned not to collaborate with Democrats on that item or any other, like as help for Ukraine, should Greene call a snap vote that would force him out of office.
With only six months on the job, Johnson finds himself in a similar situation as Kevin McCarthy, the previous House speaker who was unexpectedly removed from office last fall—the first speaker to be removed from office in history.
As he summoned an emergency meeting of Republicans in the Capitol basement, Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, told reporters, “We’re going to regroup and consider next steps.”
As the November election approaches, Johnson has linked his party’s future and political survival to Trump, betting that the front-runner and his MAGA followers will strengthen Republican legislators and guarantee that Democrats do not regain control of the House.
A Trump campaign spokesman states that Trump and Johnson will have a news conference on “election integrity” at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago estate on Friday.
Another source with knowledge of the plans stated they want to make a “joint announcement.”
Johnson changed his mind and started to endorse Trump. In the lead-up to the Trump fan base’s January 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol to prevent Democrat Joe Biden’s win from being certified, he spearheaded one of the primary legal challenges to the 2020 election.
Even though elections are generally safe and all states in the nation have verified their 2020 results that were transmitted to Congress on the day of the Capitol siege, Trump has been fixated on the topic of election integrity ever since he lost the 2020 election.
Although the details of the Trump-Johnson announcement are unknown, Johnson has tried to maintain a tight connection with Trump since he was elected House Speaker
As Trump called for the pardoning of individuals participating in the violent mob siege, Johnson resurrected the efforts of a House committee to reexamine the conclusions of the House Select Committee on the incident on January 6. About the incident, which saw rioters battle police, assault the Capitol, and wander the hallways, more than 1,300 individuals have been prosecuted. In the early aftermath of the siege, five people lost their lives.
Johnson and Trump have regular conversations, including this Tuesday night, as the speaker tries to silence his detractors, especially Greene.
Greene, a right-wing Republican from Georgia loyal to Trump, has put Johnson under constant scrutiny after filing a move to remove him as speaker. This procedural device permits a speedy vote on his leadership.
Greene and Johnson had a nearly hour-long meeting in the Capitol on Wednesday, and Johnson described their conversation as “direct and passionate.”
She submitted a five-page letter to colleagues last week outlining her complaints, which included harsh criticism of Johnson. She specifically opposed aiding Ukraine in its struggle against the Russian invasion and cautioned Johnson against putting an assistance package for Ukraine up for a vote.
Greene coordinated against Johnson’s attempts to pass the renewal of the FISA before this futile vote on Wednesday.
Trump added his voice to the conversation just before the vote by advising Republicans to vote against it on social media. Trump typed “Kill FISA” in capital letters. Trump claimed that the statute was used to spy on him. However, under a separate provision of the monitoring law, a former advisor to his 2016 presidential campaign was singled out due to possible links to Russia. Johnson can only lose one or two Republicans on every given vote because of his shaky majority, yet over 20 have defected.
Following the roughly hour-long meeting, Greene stated that Johnson offered to put her on a suggested “kitchen cabinet” of advisors for the speaker.
Greene told reporters that while she would “wait and see” about his offer, she was more concerned with how he would handle several other matters that Congress would be considering, namely the FISA vote and funding for Ukraine.
She responded, “I told him this isn’t personal.” “However, he hasn’t performed the duties for which we elected him.”
Greene, citing the government budget legislation that Johnson enacted over Republican opposition to avert a federal shutdown, has said that Johnson has plunged the Republican majority into “chaos.”
Sending his Republican colleagues and members back to their districts and forcing them to run for office on a Republican House that supported the Biden administration, she said late on Tuesday in the Capitol, “that is chaos for a Republican majority.”
Other Republicans, including those who removed McCarthy, have not taken well to Greene’s attempt to remove Johnson and are not eager to go through the hassle of attempting to choose a new speaker.
Republicans had to wait almost a month to install Johnson in place of McCarthy last autumn, a show that stopped all other Housework and exposed the turmoil inside the party through several failed votes.
Greene told reporters she has no “red line” for bringing up the action and has not publicly indicated when she may bring up the move to vacate. CNN initially reported on Johnson and Trump’s scheduled meeting.
