US committee finds China is subsidizing American fentanyl crisis
China is funding the United States’ fentanyl crisis and this will be done by using tax rebates to subsidize the manufacture and export of raw materials for the drug, a U.S. congressional report found.
To improve collaboration between the U.S. and China on the fentanyl issue, both countries could enhance communication and cooperation in several ways:
- Information Sharing: Establishing a mechanism for sharing intelligence and information on fentanyl production, distribution networks, and trafficking routes could help both countries target and dismantle illicit operations more effectively.
- Regulation and Enforcement: Implementing stricter regulations and enforcement measures on the production and export of fentanyl precursors in China can help curb the supply chain that fuels the crisis in the U.S. Additionally, enhancing monitoring of online sales platforms for illicit fentanyl-related products can help prevent their distribution.
- Joint Investigations and Operations: Collaborating on joint investigations and operations to identify and dismantle transnational criminal networks involved in fentanyl trafficking can lead to more significant disruptions in the illicit fentanyl trade.
- International Agreements: Strengthening international agreements and commitments to combat drug trafficking, including fentanyl, can provide a framework for coordinated efforts between the U.S. and China and other countries affected by the crisis.
- Public Awareness and Education: Promoting public awareness campaigns in both countries to educate individuals about the dangers of fentanyl, including its presence in counterfeit prescription drugs, can help reduce demand and prevent accidental overdoses.
By working together on these fronts, the U.S. and China can make significant strides in addressing the fentanyl crisis and preventing further harm to individuals in both countries and around the world.
