Who Was Darius Morris, and What Was His Career?

Morris was born and reared in Carson, California, just south of Los Angeles. From 2009 to 2011, he attended the University of Michigan, where he excelled academically.

He had a school record of 235 career assists in Ann Arbor, and in his sophomore year, he was selected to the third team of the Big Ten.

In a Saturday social media post, Michigan coach John Beilein paid tribute to Morris, saying, “Saddened to hear about the passing of former Wolverine Darius Morris.” Darius was our starting [point guard] in 2010–11. He played a crucial role in that game-changing 21-win season that set the stage for Michigan’s subsequent ten years of prosperity.

Morris was chosen with the 41st overall choice by his home team, the Lakers, in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft. He spent two seasons playing with Kobe Bryant before agreeing to a deal with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2013.

Morris, however, eventually found it difficult to establish himself with a new team. He played for the Memphis Grizzlies, the L.A. Clippers, and the 76s for less than a season apiece. In 2015, he retired from the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets. While living abroad, he competed in professional basketball in China, Russia, and France.
