Harvey Weinstein Transferred To Rikers: Know More Here

Harvey Weinstein was sent to the Rikers Island jail when the corrections officials found out that he had been permitted to remain in a private room while receiving medical care at a hospital in New York City.

During a medical visit at Bellevue Hospital, Weinstein, 72, received “special treatment” and privileges that other prisoners never get, like phone use, a private restroom, and access to a television, according to The City.

After the disgraced producer’s 2020 rape conviction was overturned last month, prosecutors announced to a judge that they want to retry him. The producer was brought back to New York from an upstate prison to appear in court.

According to a source who spoke with the newspaper, he was moved from the Manhattan hospital on Monday, where he had been housed on a floor apart from other prisoners.

Weinstein allegedly watched CNN while in the hospital and spoke with his lawyer on the phone that he was allowed to use.

The city’s prison officials rushed to try and make things right after The City published its article.

Sources close to Weinstein told The New York Post that “within an hour or two of that being printed it started [corrections officials] contemplating how to move him and when to move him quickly.”

Weinstein reported experiencing chest issues soon after his transfer to Rikers Island on April 27.

“He’s a sick man,” Weinstein’s attorney Donna Rotunno told The City. “Harvey has multiple health issues and he’s never gotten the level of care that he received prior to going into custody.”

The sources speaking to the New York Post corroborated the claim that Weinstein is ill, saying he’s “actually not doing well. He has real medical issues. The care is much better at Bellevue than Rikers.”

According to Weinstein’s legal team, he was diagnosed with pneumonia and is currently experiencing a host of other medical problems, such as chest and abdominal pain.

Even so, a technician told The City, speaking under anonymity, that Weinstein could bathe, shave, and get in and out of bed by himself. The technician referred to his prolonged stay in the intensive care unit as “preferential treatment” and questioned why.

The tech allegedly told the publication, “He’s not supposed to be there.” “We get special treatment here.”

Since the publication of the story, Weinstein has been brought back to Rikers.

The New York Court of Appeals reversed the disgraced producer’s 2020 rape conviction on April 25 after discovering that the trial judge had made several dubious rulings.

During the trial, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office stated that Weinstein will face a new trial in the fall.

“We believe in this case and we will be retrying the case,” stated DA Alvin Bragg, while requesting a fall 2024 trial from Manhattan Supreme Justice Curtis Farber.

The District Attorney requested that the legal process start in September 2024. According to Nicole Blumberg, the assistant district attorney, her agency is certain that Weinstein will be found guilty once more.

A new trial date may be scheduled for September, according to Justice Curtis Farber, who requested the parties to come back to court on May 29.
