A bus plunges off a bridge in Russia:

The Investigative Committee, Russia’s primary criminal investigation organization, announced the death toll. It did not specify how many others were hurt, although the emergency ministry previously stated that six persons rescued from the bus were in severe or critical condition.

What do the reports say?

According to Russian news reports, the city bus carrying 15 to 20 people burst over a barrier and plunged into the Moika River in central St. Petersburg. Six of them on board climbed out of the sea on their own.

A security video released by Russian media showed the bus moving quickly, making a sharp turn onto the bridge, veering across lanes, and hitting another vehicle before smashing through the barrier and tumbling into the river.

According to one witness, onlookers jumped into the water to help rescue people. “They just dove in with their clothes on and helped,” she explained in Russian. Authorities in St. Petersburg stated the bus’s owner had been punished 23 times for various offenses. The majority of the bus services in the city are provided by private companies. Another witness claimed that “either he was steering erratically or the brakes had failed.” The police apprehended the bus driver. His wife was quoted by Russian media as saying that bosses compelled him to work a dawn shift after working 20 hours the day before and receiving little sleep. Authorities have launched a criminal inquiry into alleged traffic offenses and risky travel services.
