On Sunday 12th May the world celebrated Mother’s Day. But it’s not the same for all mothers.

There is a small group of mothers who refuse to stop searching for their missing children.

For the past three years, they gather every year to remind the community that they are not losing their hope of finding their missing children.

They all assemble in Daley Plaza to share stories of their missing child. They put all their efforts into finding them.

Karen Philips, the mother of Kierra Coles. She was three months pregnant and was a postal worker who disappeared in October 2018. She was last seen leaving her apartment near 82nd Street and Coles Avenue in South Chicago.

Coles has been missing for nearly 6 years and still, there is no clue about her. Karen Phillips said, “It’s so stressful not knowing where my child is. It’s hurtful because I don’t know if she’s being harmed if she’s OK. Is she cold? Is she hot? Did she have a baby? Do I have a grandchild out there somewhere? It really takes a hold on my mind.”

LaShann Walker, not only her daughter but also her grandson also goes missing.

Her daughter Diamond Bynumb and grandson King Walker have been missing for nearly a decade. They disappeared while visiting their relative’s home in Gary, Indiana. They were last seen on July 25, 2015.

Walker stated “It’s not knowing whether they’re being harmed or not, whether they’re still in this world or not.It is the worst feeling anybody could ever have.”

Both families have got frustrated with law enforcement and they say there is a lack of effort from the government to find their missing children.

According to police, these missing cases are still active but the families are asking the public to share their stories in hope.

Walker said, “We’re standing here on Mother’s Day about our missing children. I can’t find the words to even explain the hurt every day.”

Phillips said, “Always keep hope that you will get the answers you’re looking for, just don’t give up.”
