Actor Johnny Wactor of General Hospital passed away, and new information has come to light.

The actor passed away from a gunshot wound to the chest, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner. A homicide is reported as the cause of his death.

Wactor’s brother Grant Wactor told PEOPLE that his brother was shot and killed early on May 25 when Wactor came upon three armed car thieves trying to take his catalytic converter from his car.

Around 3:25 a.m., according to Grant, his brother, a bartender, and a female coworker were making their way to their cars following their shift.

Wactor saw that his automobile “was jacked up or lifted in some way,” according to Grant, as the colleagues were getting closer to their cars. He believed he was being hauled away.

It wasn’t long before Grant’s brother understood “they were not tow truck people.”

According to Grant, Wactor, 37, had his hands raised when he was shot and had placed his body in front of his female coworker to protect her.

“He did not confront them,” he said. “He did not try to stop them. He was just trying to diffuse the situation by stepping back.”

Grant surmised the men “weren’t expecting anybody to walk up on them, so they got scared. And there’s nothing more dangerous than a coward with a gun in his hand.”

The men drove away from the location after the shooting. Wactor was taken to a nearby hospital and later declared dead.

Famous for playing Brando Corbin on General Hospital, Wactor starred in several television shows and films, including Vantastic, Animal Kingdom, Training Day, Criminal Minds, Army Wives, NCIS, The OA, Westworld, The Passenger, Barbee Rehab, Siberia, and Agent X.
