Man Caught Driving During Virtual Court Hearing

Corey Harris, 44, described the viral footage of him driving at a recent court appearance as “extremely embarrassing.”

“With the type of ties that I have with the church and the community, it’s very embarrassing.”

Harris was charged with a misdemeanour of driving with a suspended license and made an appearance before Judge Cedric Simpson in Ann Arbor earlier this month.

When Harris appeared in court via video and was spotted driving, 7 News Detroit asked him what he was thinking.

“What was I thinking? I was thinking about getting my wife medical help. That’s what I was thinking,” Harris said. “I wasn’t thinking about the fact that I got a suspended license. I don’t care about all that.”

Simpson gave Harris until six o’clock that day to report to the Washtenaw County Jail.

However, Harris informed us that Saginaw Friend of the Court was to responsible for the confusion and that he never should have been penalized with driving on a suspended license last autumn.

“They were supposed to have lifted it two years ago, but they didn’t,” Harris said.

According to documents from the Secretary of State, Harris’ license was initially revoked in 2010 due to unpaid child support in Saginaw County.

Then, according to court documents, a judge lifted the restriction in 2022, restoring Harris’s ability to drive. However, it seems that information was never forwarded to the Secretary of State, according to whose records Harris’ license was still recorded as suspended as of Thursday afternoon, the same documents that the judge and police were using.

Harris was incarcerated for two days. Furthermore, Harris stated on Thursday that he attempted to settle the issue by going back to the Secretary of State.

We attempted to inquire as to what might have gone wrong in Harris’s case by contacting the director of Saginaw’s Friend of the Court. We’re awaiting word from them.

Harris said, “Always double-check behind these workers because they will say that they will do something and they don’t do it,” Harris said.
