Tourist Missing in Greece:

On the Greek island of Amorgos, a tourist from the United States went missing on Tuesday after going on a solitary climb. The hunt for him is still ongoing.

According to a Greek news site, the rescue team, which consists of officers from South Aegean Police Command, the Embassy, volunteers from the Coast Guard, the Amorgos Volunteer Rescue Team, and a group from the Greek island of Paros, has been organizing the search for Albert Calibet,59, over almost a quarter of the island. There was also an aircraft hunt for Calibet.

In an email, a State Department representative verified to TIME that they were aware of allegations of an American citizen going missing in Greece and that they were prepared to help American individuals and their families.

According to the Greek Reporter, caliber was “well-known on the island” due to several trips over the previous five years, Amorgos deputy mayor Calliope Despotidi said.

The authorities are using drones to aid in the hunt while they try to locate Calibet’s phone. According to the Greek Reporter, Calibet last communicated with his sister on Tuesday by sending her a picture of a trail marker. He had been scheduled to meet with a buddy from noon to one p.m. local time, but he never made it.

Authorities surmise that Calibet strayed from his intended hiking path, which was predicted to take more than four hours to complete.

In 1998, Calibet began employment as a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy. He continued to work part-time in the department even after retiring. Shortly after British TV doctor Michael Mosley was discovered dead on the Greek island of Symi, Calibet vanished. Authorities said that Mosley passed away from natural causes, but additional investigation is needed before determining the official cause of death.

Greece has been experiencing extreme heat waves, with predicted temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to excessive temperatures, several schools and nurseries, including well-known tourist destinations like Acropolis Hill, were closed mid-week.
